Flu shots and travel vaccines in Windsor: timing and planning

5 min read

Vaccination is the cheapest medicine there is — but timing decides how well it works, particularly for flu season and for travel.

Flu shots

Influenza vaccine becomes available in Ontario each autumn, typically from October, and protection takes about two weeks to develop. Getting vaccinated in October or November covers the usual December-to-March peak.

It is free for everyone aged six months and older who lives, works or studies in Ontario. It is especially important for adults over 65, pregnant people, young children, anyone with a chronic condition, and those living with high-risk family members.

Other routine adult vaccines

  • Tetanus and diphtheria booster every ten years
  • Pneumococcal vaccine for adults 65 and over or with chronic conditions
  • Shingles vaccine from age 50
  • HPV vaccine, publicly funded in school programs and available to adults
  • Whooping cough vaccine during each pregnancy

Planning travel vaccines

Book a travel consultation six to eight weeks before departure. Some vaccines need multiple doses spaced weeks apart, and malaria prophylaxis may need to start before you leave.

Destination determines the list — hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and others. Travel vaccines and consultations are not covered by OHIP, so ask for the cost before booking.

What to bring

Bring your immunization record if you have it, your itinerary including rural stops, and a list of your medications and conditions. Pregnancy, immune suppression and age change which vaccines are suitable.
