Birth control and IUDs — on your terms.
There is no single best contraceptive, only the one that fits your body, your plans and your life right now. We review every option with you, and we insert and remove IUDs in clinic.
Options we prescribe and provide
- Hormonal IUDs — insertion, checks and removal in clinic
- Copper IUDs — hormone-free, effective up to ten years
- Contraceptive implants and injections
- The pill, patch and vaginal ring
- Emergency contraception and counselling
- Fertility planning for those trying to conceive
What an IUD appointment looks like
The first visit is a consultation: we review your history, discuss the options, and choose the device with you. A separate appointment is booked for insertion so you have unhurried time in the room.
Insertion itself takes a few minutes. Cramping during and after is common — we suggest taking ibuprofen an hour beforehand and arranging a quiet rest of the day if you can. A short follow-up check confirms the device is sitting correctly.
Removal is quicker than insertion and can usually be done at a regular appointment. If you are replacing a device, removal and insertion happen in the same visit.
Costs and coverage
The physician assessment, insertion and removal are insured services under OHIP. The device itself is a product cost, often covered by private drug plans or by OHIP+ for eligible patients under 25. We will tell you exactly what to expect before you commit.
Frequently asked questions.
Does IUD insertion hurt?
Most people feel strong cramping for under a minute, easing afterwards. Taking ibuprofen beforehand helps, and you can ask your physician to stop at any point.
Do you remove IUDs placed at another clinic?
Yes. Bring the device details if you have them and we will arrange removal or replacement.
How soon does birth control start working?
It depends on the method and where you are in your cycle. Your physician will tell you whether you need backup contraception and for how long.
