How to get a family doctor in Windsor when you are on a waitlist

6 min read

Windsor-Essex has tens of thousands of residents without a family physician. Getting one is partly patience and partly knowing where to put your name.

Register with Health Care Connect

Health Care Connect is Ontario's provincial referral service. You register once with your health card number, and a care connector tries to match you with a physician or nurse practitioner accepting patients in your area. Registration is free and you stay on the list until you are matched.

Keep your contact details current. Matches are lost every year because a phone number changed and the call went nowhere.

Register directly with new and expanding clinics

The fastest route is often a clinic that is opening or adding physicians. New practices build their patient roster from scratch, which means openings exist that never reach a central list.

Our clinic on Tecumseh Rd E opens in December 2026 and is taking registrations now. Registering early matters — rosters fill in the order people sign up.

Ask about every door into a practice

  • Family health teams and community health centres in Windsor-Essex
  • Clinics where a family member is already a patient — many prioritise relatives
  • Nurse practitioner-led clinics, which provide the same primary care
  • New graduates starting practice each summer, when rosters open

What to do while you wait

Use walk-in clinics for acute problems, but ask for a copy of the visit note each time so you can build a record. Keep your own list of medications, diagnoses, surgeries and family history — it will save your future family doctor an entire appointment.

Do not skip screening while you are unattached. Pap tests, mammograms and colon cancer screening can be arranged through a walk-in visit.

Common questions

Does it cost anything to register for a family doctor?

No. Enrolment and insured visits are covered by OHIP with a valid Ontario health card.

Can I register with more than one clinic?

Yes, and you should. You can only be formally rostered to one physician at a time, but you can be on multiple waitlists.
